Action for Children launches urgent appeal to tackle child neglect |
Serious neglect kills — and, worryingly, studies suggest that up to 10% of children experience neglect.
That's why Action for Children are launching an urgent appeal to make the UK wake up to neglect, and raise £17 million over the next three years to help neglected children.
Why neglect?
Neglect is the biggest reason a child needs a child protection plan — more so than both physical and sexual abuse. It's a complicated problem that's often hard to spot. It could be a child who is unloved, goes to bed hungry night after night, or who wears dirty clothes to school each day — but the effects of neglect can be devastating.
What are we doing?
Because neglect is complex, tackling it can be tough — there are no quick fixes. But, with your help, we can be there for neglected children and young people for as long as it takes. For example, we will:
- reach out to children at risk of neglect — using mobile outreach services to help those most in need
- develop targeted, national programmes to tackle specific aspects of neglect, including nutrition and parenting classes
- ensure professionals have the skills and tools to identify and respond to neglect
- actively campaign so children's voices are heard
Please help us
